We all have had the experience of sitting on a bus with someone who just doesn't understand the concept of moderation when it comes to scent. Scents tend to mix not only with each other, but also with your own body's chemistry. So, avoid being the man that everyone can't wait to get off the bus to get away from.

Throw out your old strong scents. This means shaving gels, soaps, aftershaves, colognes, even deodorant. When you have any single overpowering scent, you pretty much ruin the rest.

Invest in a good body wash; this is going to be your base scent. Honestly, unless you are a smoker, this is the smell people are going to notice the most at long distances. This is mostly because it is used on your entire body. You may love that bar of soap, but its a haven for nastiness both with the dirt that sticks to it, and what it does to your shower. You don't even need a loofah. Just pour some soap in your hand and rub it everywhere.

Use mildly-scented or scentless deoderants. Scentless is a good option, but that often means that you still smell the chemicals they used to make the deodorant. So, opt for a mild scented brand.

Buy the shaving products. This is where it's almost non-negotiable to get anything but scentless products. Once again you will still probably be able to smell the chemicals used to make the product, but the chemical smell is a lot less likely to linger for more than a few minutes.

No one should be able to smell your scent unless they are within about a foot and a half from you. Are you worried that no one will smell it? Well, don't worry. As your body temperature rises it will evaporate the scent from your body. This will emit the smell of the body wash without it being overpowering. Plus it will cause that special someone to want to get that much closer to you to get a good whiff of it. Double bonus!

Perpetrator 4 image It can get hot in the bar. Especially when there is dancing (and when I’m there, there is always dancing). However, there’s always that one guy busting a move in the middle of the dance floor who everyone seems to be avoiding. Then you see it – the dark stain spreading across his back, the beads of perspiration rolling down his face. You’re scared to even go near him, lest some sweat fly off him and land on your face or worse, in your drink. Definitely not conducive to an invitation home. —Katie, Michigan State University
